New location for Mountain Fountain
The popular sculpture Mountain Fountain by Terry Stringer is set to have a new home in the grounds of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell.
The sculpture was removed from Aotea Square last year, due to the square's redevelopment.
A decision was made to relocate the sculpture and the public was asked to provide input on its new location.
After exploring a number of sites, two options were presented to the public - the grounds of Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell and Selwyn Reserve, Mission Bay.
Public feedback strongly favoured the Parnell site. Discussions with the artist Terry Stringer, the Advisory Panel for Public Art and the Cathedral Council, also clearly supported the Parnell site.
Councillor Greg Moyle, chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee, says: "The fountain fits in well with the architecture of the cathedral and the design of the forecourt. It also fulfils architect Professor Toy's original vision for the cathedral - to have an art work located next to it.
"In choosing the Holy Trinity Cathedral as the venue for relocating this sculpture we have listened to the community who voted overwhelmingly for this to be the preferred site.
"The Cathedral Dean, Cathedral Council and Bishops Faculty Committee are also very supportive of the relocation. In fact, they originally approached the council with the proposal to relocate Mountain Fountain into their forecourt area."
The Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee today approved the relocation to the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
The fountain is scheduled to be moved to this new location in June 2010.
