New Zealand sculptor Andrew Drummond to exhibit in Christchurch
This autumn sees the opening of the first comprehensive survey exhibition of acclaimed New Zealand sculptor Andrew Drummond at Christchurch Art Gallery.
Observation / Action / Reflection focuses on Drummond's rich and diverse work between 1980 and 2010, and will include sculpture, installation, documentation of performance art, drawing, photography and technology.
Drummond produces engaging and dynamic large-scale mixed-media works that explore themes relating to the land and the human body, machines and movement.
Gallery Director Jenny Harper expects the exhibition to engage a wide range of visitors.
"Drummond's sculptures convey a convincing sense of presence. They are innovative, captivating and sometimes monumental in size." Ms Harper says, "Through his lifelong commitment to creating challenging work, Drummond has enhanced the development of sculpture in New Zealand."
The exhibition will feature two major kinetic sculptures installed in the foyer - the recent Viewing Device, Counter-Rotating and Counter-Rotating and Earthing Device. Both works, made from innovative technology, will be installed at Christchurch Art Gallery next month.
Born in Nelson, but now resident in Christchurch, Drummond is known for creating sculptures that involve technology. After graduating with an honours degree in fine art from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, he began his career as a performance artist, exploring the connection between humans and the land, as well as the management of our environment and the conservation of natural resources.
Today, his sculptures can be found in private and public collections throughout the country and overseas. Drummond has received a number of major awards, including a NZOM for his services to sculpture, and has been artist in residence in galleries and universities in New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain. He was senior lecturer in sculpture at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts from 1992 until 2003, and today works full-time on public and private sculpture commissions from his Christchurch studio.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a stunning catalogue produced by Christchurch Art Gallery.
Andrew Drummond: Observation / Action / Reflection opens at Christchurch Art Gallery on 14 May 2010 and will run until 5 September 2010.
