Artist and arts practitioner initiated projects and project spaces in New Zealand

There are many kinds of projects founded and run by artists and arts practitioners, ranging from social coffee groups to internationally recognized project spaces. Initiatives for fostering and presenting art are reflective of the strategy and mode of survival many new arts graduates must also adopt. Initiating projects for the continued presentation of work is an important factor to consider for anyone developing an arts career in a small marketplace.

Following the culmination of a period of study, recent arts graduates often find themselves not only outside the walls of their institution, but also with the feeling of being outside the art community in which they aim to play an part. Independently developed initiatives and projects are the bridge that enables creative practice to develop and flourish in this environment with a continued level of critical discourse.
